Öğe Comparative analysis of ocular findings between surgical and natural menopause patients: A cross-sectional study(Bayrakol Medical Publisher, 2024) Yalcin, Necim; Okuyan, Erhan; Baysal, Zeki; Kandemir, Selim; Karakaya, Fethi; Barut, AdilAim: Menopause can play a role in changing eye findings. This study sought to examine early postsurgical menopause patients in comparison with natural menopause patients and premenopausal patients in terms of ocular findings. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study included data from 108 women (48 surgical, 30 natural menopausal and 30 perimenopausal women) attending the Gynaecology and Ophthalmology clinics. Data included age, women blood level of hormone, and eye findings at presentation. Results: Women in surgical menopause differed in mean increase in bilateral intraocular pressure compared to women in natural menopause and perimenopause. Women in natural menopause had higher mean scores for bilateral intraocular pressure compared with women in perimenopause. Women in natural menopause had increased mean bilateral eye macular thickness compared to women in surgical menopause and perimenopause. Women in surgical menopause had significantly higher mean right and left eye macular thickness than women in perimenopause. Bilateral eye central corneal thickness scores were significantly higher surgical menopause and natural menopause women than perimenopause women. Scores for bilateral eye grade were similar across the groups. Both surgical menopause and natural menopause were in significant associations with the intraocular pressure, macular thickness, and central corneal thickness of the right and left eye. Discussion: Although there are no clear data on menopause and ocular symptoms in published studies, this study shows that menopause has significant adverse effects on intraocular pressure and macular thickness when pre-menopausal women are compared with menopausal women.Öğe Comparison of the Cosmetic Efficacy of Extractum Cepae and Silicone-Based Gel in Upper Blepharoplasty(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2024) Guclu, Emin Serbulent; Ozer, Omer; Celik, Seda; Eroz, Pinar; Baysal, ZekiBackground:Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most common surgeries performed worldwide. However, an important problem after surgery is scar formation. The authors aimed to compare the efficacy of extractum cepae and silicone-based gels on postoperative scar appearance in patients undergoing upper eyelid blepharoplasty. Methods:After suture removal, patients were divided into 3 groups: group 1 [n=82, extractum cepae, sodium heparin, and allantoin mixture, Contractubex Gel (Merz Pharmaceuticals, Frankfurt, Germany)], group 2 [n=81, silicone-based gel (Dermatix Ultra Silicone Gel, Menarini, Singapore)], and group 3 (n=77, no additional treatment). Patients used the topical gels twice daily. All evaluations were performed on color photographs by 2 physicians during the postoperative first and third months. Results:The mean visual analog scale scores were significantly higher in all 3 groups in the postoperative first month (4.39 +/- 2.03, 4.41 +/- 2.57, and 4.33 +/- 2.46, respectively) compared with the postoperative third month (2.22 +/- 1.24, 2.15 +/- 1.38, and 2.29 +/- 1.47, respectively) (P=0.014, 0.037, and 0.026, respectively). The Is the scar more stiff score was higher in the postoperative first month compared with the third month. Conclusions:In conclusion, blepharoplasty scars improved up to the postoperative third month, but the topical gels used did not significantly improve the cosmetic appearance of blepharoplasty scars compared with the control group.Öğe Evaluation of Cataract Surgery Outcomes in Geriatric Population with Geriatric Depression Scale(2024) Ünal, Gonca Ayşe; Özer, Ayşegül Barak; Güçlü, Emin Serbülent; Özer, Ömer; Baysal, ZekiAim: To show the changes in geriatric depression scale (GDS) scores in patients undergoing senile cataract sur- gery. Methods: A total of 74 patients aged 60 years and older who presented to the Mersin City E&R hospital Ophthal- mology Clinic between January 01, 2023, and May 01, 2023, with low vision and underwent phacoemulsification surgery for senile cataract were included in this study. Patients with antidepressant use and/or ongoing follow-up and treatment for depression in a psychiatric clinic were excluded from this study. All patients were evaluated with the GDS before the surgery and the third month after surgery. Results: When the distribution according to GDS is analyzed, 38 patients scored 0-10 points, 18 patients scored 11-13 points, 18 patients scored 14 points and above in the preoperative period. In the postoperative period, 49 patients scored 0-10 points, 14 patients scored 11-13 points, 11 patients scored 14 points and above. The mean preoperative GDS score was 10.22 ± 5.01, while the mean postoperative GDS score was 8.2 ± 4.92. There was a positive correlation (r=0.680 preoperative and r=0.801 postoperative) between visual acuity and GDS score in the preoperative period (p<0.001 for both). Conclusions: Cataract surgery may potentially reduce the risk of depression or shorten the duration of depression in geriatric patientsÖğe Evaluation of peripheral blood inflammatory biomarkers in sickle cell disease with and without retinopathy(Springer, 2024) Ozer, Omer; Dogan, Levent; Baysal, Zeki; Basir, Hakan; Ciftci, Ali Turker; Eroz, Pinar; Guclu, Emin SerbuelentBackground The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of blood-cell associated inflammation markers in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and sickle cell retinopathy (SCR). Methods Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SIII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), systemic inflammation modulation index (SIMI) and aggregate systemic inflammation index (AISI) were calculated. This study included 45 healthy controls (Group 1) and 100 SCD (Group 2). Patients in Group 2 were then divided into two groups: without SCR (Group 3) and with SCR (Group 4), and patients with SCR (Group 4) were further divided into two groups: non-proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (NPSCR) (Group 5) and proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSCR) (Group 6). Results The mean values for NLR, PLR, SIII, SIRI, AISI, and SIMI were significantly higher in Group 2 compared to Group 1 (p = 0.011 for NLR, p = 0.004 for SIII, and p < 0.001 for others). Furthermore, AISI and SIMI parameters demonstrated statistically significant discriminatory power to distinguish Group 5 from Group 6 (p = 0.0016 and p = 0.0006, respectively). Conclusion Given the critical role of inflammatory mechanisms in the pathogenesis of SCD and its related complications, the assessment of blood-cell-associated inflammatory markers may present a pragmatic and advantageous approach to the clinical oversight and therapeutic intervention of SCD.Öğe Protective properties of spectacle lenses used as ultraviolet blockers(2024) Baysal, Zeki; Biçer, Gamze Yıldırım; Özer, ÖmerIn this study, we evaluated the UV transmittance of spectacle lenses in the Turkish market, which are reported to have UV blocking properties, and tested their suitability. Samples were obtained from patients who were admitted to the ophthalmology outpatient clinic of our hospital for refractive error and who wore glasses as UV block. No limitation was made regarding the spectacle size and duration of spectacle wear. Measurements were tested by the principal investigator using an ultraviolet detector. The right and left lens were measured separately. All measurements were performed at room temperature (22-25°C) in a humidity regulated (20-40%) room without direct light. UV protection level was measured for 120 spectacles used for refractive errors. Only 28 (23.3%) of 120 glasses had protection level up to 400 nm UV. Twenty-four (20%) of the glasses had a protection level of 0 even though they were labeled as having UV blocking properties. It is clear that strict regulations need to be implemented to improve the protection levels of glasses.Öğe The effect of adrenaline and trypan blue used during cataract surgery on anatomical and functional outcomes in pseudoexfoliation syndrome patients(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Ozer, Omer; Dogan, Levent; Baysal, ZekiPurposeTo evaluate the effect of the intracameral adrenaline and trypan blue used during cataract surgery on corneal endothelial parameters in pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) patients.MethodsThe patients were divided into four groups according to intraoperative use of agents during cataract surgery: intracameral adrenaline (1/10,000, 0.1 ml) (group 1), trypan blue (0.6 mg/ml, 0.1 ml) (group 2), combination of adrenaline and trypan blue (group 3) and none (group 4).ResultsPreoperative ECD, CV, HEX and CCT parameters were similar between the groups. A mean loss of 12.7% in ECD was observed at the postoperative third months compared to the preoperative. In group 3, ECD was found to be lower in the postoperative third months compared to the preoperative (p = 0.014). In the other groups, no statistically significant difference was found in preoperative and postoperative comparisons.ConclusionIn conclusion, the utilization of intracameral adrenaline or trypan blue did not cause a significant difference in corneal endothelium in PEX patients. However, their combined use may have a negative effect on endothelial cell density. In a cataract surgery performed in the presence of PEX, the increased likelihood of endothelial damage should be taken into consideration, and appropriate precautions should be taken preoperatively and intraoperatively.
