    An equal opportunity practice in education: Determination of classes by draft in schools

    The aim of the present study was to assess the implementation of “the draft-based branch determination” in Adiyaman provincial center primary and middle schools in Turkey based on the views of the school stakeholders. The study was conducted with the mixed method and the total number of participants in the qualitative section of the study was 72 and the total number of participants in the quantitative section was 1128. In the study, the qualitative data were collected with a semi-structured interview form, and the quantitative data were collected with the “Draft-based branch determination application assessment survey.” The qualitative study data were analyzed with descriptive and content analysis, while quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistical analysis and chi-square test. In the qualitative section of the study, half of the participants stated the negative aspects of this practice, while 6 did not provide any opinion on the negative aspects of the practice and 25 participants stated that the practice had no negative aspects. On the other hand, 71 participants expressed views on the positive aspects of the practice. In the quantitative section, the participants participated in the positive statements about the practice at a higher rate when compared to the negative statements. The majority of the participants desired the practice to prevail in the future. While there was a significant correlation between the views on the maintenance of the draft-based branch determination system and the stakeholder variable, there was no significant correlation with the school type variable. In conclusion, it can be suggested that the qualitative study findings were consistent with the quantitative findings and the qualitative findings could be generalized for a larger sample group. © 2019 by authors, all rights reserved.
