Öğe A taxonomy of manufacturing strategies: A study of the Turkish automotive industry(ACADEMIC JOURNALS, 2011) Bulbul, HasanThe aim of this study is to explore the existence of different patterns of manufacturing strategies and the relationship between these patterns and firm performance in the Turkish automotive industry. Apart from the scarce taxonomic studies in the operations strategy literature, this research focuses on a single industry and examines the relationship between the firm ownership and strategic types. Three different strategic types (differentiators, intermediators and low emphasizers) are identified based on taxonomy of 31 international and leading automotive firms operating in Turkey. The three types do not differ from each other in terms of ownership, but they do differ significantly in terms of growth performance. Furthermore, it is observed that the findings partially support the sand cone model and the underlying dimensions that described West European manufacturers.Öğe An empirical investigation of advanced manufacturing technology investment patterns: Evidence from a developing country(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2013) Bulbul, Hasan; Omurbek, Nuri; Paksoy, Turan; Bektas, TolgaAdvanced manufacturing technology (AMT) investment patterns in developing countries is in need of further investigation, particularly in the light of the conflicting evidence from the literature. This paper provides new evidence on AMT investment patterns from the Turkish automotive industry and develops a taxonomy by exploring the relationships between AMT investment patterns, ownership structure, firm size and performance. Analysis of industry survey data suggests the existence of three groups with different AMT investment strategies. Results suggest that AMT investment patterns are not only significantly correlated with firm performance or ownership, but also reveals significant differences in manufacturing performance across investment patterns. This study examines the effects of firms' views regarding OHS and firm characteristics (size, ownership structure) on OHS applications. Data have been collected from 265 firms operating in eight different sectors in Turkey's manufacturing industry. As a result of the performed cluster analysis, the research sample has been classified in terms of firms' views into two groups: obligated and willing. No differences have been found between the two groups in terms of firm characteristics. However, the willing group is statistically higher compared to the obligated group in terms of both OHS applications (workers and precautions) and the benefits obtained from these applications (production and reputation). While large-scale and foreign-owned companies are at the forefront in OHS applications, no difference has been found in terms of sector.Öğe The relationship between environmental awareness, environmental behaviors, and carbon footprint in Turkish households(Springer Heidelberg, 2020) Bulbul, Hasan; Buyukkeklik, Arzum; Topal, Ayse; Ozoglu, BuketHaving knowledge about household environmental behaviors is important for planning and conducting efforts to reduce carbon footprint. In this study, the relationship between environmental awareness, purchasing, household practices, and carbon footprint was investigated, and the impact of demographics on these variables was determined. The analysis shows that sensitivity dimension of environmental awareness is related to few environmental behavior variables (purchasing and efficiency) whereas willingness dimension was related to all variables (except gas). While improvements in demographic factors (income, education, and female employment status) positively affect environmental sensitivity, they increase carbon footprint from automobile. Only increase in income has an effect on willingness. It is determined that income positively affects environmental purchasing. Furthermore, it is revealed that environmental household practices did not differ in terms of demographic characteristics, except the effect of education on pollution.Öğe The Relationships between Service Quality, Patient Satisfaction and Preference in Public and Private Hospitals in Turkey: A Comparative Study(TURKIYE ORTA DOGU AMME IDARESI ENSTITUSU, 2014) Demirer, Omur; Bulbul, HasanThis study comparatively explores the suitability of SERVQUAL and the relationship between perceived service quality, patient satisfaction, and patient preference (intent to revisit the hospital) for the public and private hospitals in Turkey. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis indicated that SERVQUAL is a valid and reliable instrument to measure health care service quality in Turkey. However, the dimensions of SERVQUAL are not confirmed. Public hospitals' quality is composed of two dimensions (i. reliability-tangibility and ii. responsiveness-assurance-empathy); private hospitals' quality is composed of three dimensions (i. reliability-assurance, ii. tangibility and iii. empathy). Structural equation analysis showed that perceived service quality has a significant positive impact on patient satisfaction and patient satisfaction has a significant positive impact on patient preference both in public and private hospitals. On the other hand, perceived service quality directly affects patient preference in public hospitals while the same effect is indirect thanks to patient satisfaction in private hospitals.
