Contributions of the Anatolian Diagonal effect on Turkish aphid diversity
(2019) Şenol, Özhan; Görür, Gazi; Beğen, Hayal Akyıldırım
The Anatolian Diagonal, which divide Turkey into two geographical part as East and West start fromHatay province and reaches toward to Rize province, is a mountain range. Therefore, East and WestAnatolian part of Turkey has different species composition due to this natural barrier. In this context, results obtained from the study conducted in Inner West Anatolian Part (Afyonkarahisar, Kütahya andUşak provinces from 2012 to 2013) and East (Adıyaman and Malatya province) and South (Şanlıurfaprovince) Anatolian Part (from 2015-2018) were compared to possible effects of Anatolian Diagonalon aphid diversity in Turkey. 219 species were determined from Inner West Anatolian Part and 91aphid species among of them have not been observed in East and South Anatolian Part. Furthermore,226 aphid species were determined from East and South Anatolian Part and 111 aphid species amongof them have not been observed in Inner West Anatolian Part. Preliminary analysis of the derivedresults indicated strong effects of Anatolian Diagonal on Turkey aphid diversity. There is no detailedstudy about Anatolian Diagonal effects on aphid biodiversity and further studies should be carried outto see barriers effects on Turkey aphid diversity like Anatolian Diagonal. This study aims to giveinformation about aphid biodiversity of West and East part of Anatolian Diagonal.

Determination of quality characteristics of some Monofloral, Polyfloral and Honeydew honeys in terms of physical properties and Proline content
(2024) Özbay, Merve; Arslan, Fatma Nur; Görür, Gazi
This study aims to investigate some physical properties and proline content of 95 different honey samples to reveal their characteristic features and evaluate their quality according to the Turkish Food Codex. The moisture content, which is highly important parameter in determining the shelf life of honeys, determined between 14.60% and 21.20% and these values were determined to be within the limits (<20%) except for four honey samples. The brix values of honey samples were examined between 77.23% and 83.60%, and they were found to be within the acceptable range. The other physical parameter, namely the electrical conductivity values of samples determined between 0.11 and 1.20 mS/cm. Proline, which is an important value in determining the type and maturity of honey and is the amino acid found in the highest amount in honey, should be above 300 mg/kg in honey, according to the communique. The proline amount of the honey samples examined varied between 281.61 and 2259.43 mg/kg. It was determined that the proline amount of two honey samples were below the limit. It was concluded that most of the tested samples were in compliance with the food codex in terms of quality standards.

Effects of Temperature Fluctuations on Aphids Life Cycle: Four Case Species
(2023) Görür, Gazi; Başer, Gizem; Beğen, Hayal Akyıldırım; Şenol, Özhan; Akyürek, Başak
Global warming has great potential to influence all organisms including many animal species, in particular aphids. It has been shown that four aphid species, Cinara cedri, Cinara tujafilina, Metopolophium dirhodum, Pterochloroides persicae, maintained their parthenogenetic generations in Niğde and Artvin Provinces during the winter season in contrast to common life cycles related with cooler and dry conditions. It has been considered that determined aphid species should spend winter season as an overwintering egg as these species mainly show holocyclic life cycles in Niğde and Artvin. Fluctuations in winter average temperature in Niğde and Artvin during last two years enable them to produce more parthenogenetic generations as an indicator of the influences of the temperature fluctuations. These findings are in coincidence with the general approaches that increase in temperature most probably result in more generations in aphid species and in turn let these species to become a severe pest.

Evaluation of Interactions Among Aphids, Endosymbionts, and Host Plants: A Foresight for the Future
(2022) Ergın, Gülay Olcabey; Ozturk, Ayten; Görür, Gazi
Insects, the most common and most successful animals on earth, establish long-term and stable ecological relationships with bacteria. Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are an insect group of agri cultural importance that can feed on many herbaceous, shrubs, and woody plants as hosts and are also in close relationship with endosymbiont bacteria. It is seen that aphid is going to further increase their current pest potential in the near future due to their high adaptability and rapid reproduction ability. In order to be effective and successful in the biological control of aphids, many features of aphids are required to be known and clarified. Therefore, determining the interactions among aphid, host plant, and endosymbiont in this relationship might make biological control of aphids more effective. In this review, what is known about the relationship among aphids, the primary endosymbiotic bacterium Buchnera aphidicola, and the host plant is examined, and the possibilities of using symbiont bacteria in the biological control of aphids are discussed.

Foresights Derived from Recent Studies Conducted on Turkey Aphid Fauna
(2020) Görür, Gazi; Şenol, Özhan; Beğen, Hayal Akyıldırım; Akyürek, Başak
Aphids are one of the economically and ecologically most important groups of insects due to their uniquereproduction, ecological plasticity and life cycles. Aphid causes directly and indirectly crop loses in plant species by sucking plantphloem and transmitting about 60% of plant viruses. Aphid management applications lead to important economic cost each yearthat increases importance of early detection and accurate determination of aphid species. Turkey located at the junction of theimportant continents and passageway of the species. Richness of flora, having large agricultural landscape-diversity, consistingvarious types of climates, being a geographically diverse large country let Turkey to be attractive for aphid species. Turkey consistsof about 12.000 plant species and about 31 % are endemic. Despite these particular features, only about 2% of Turkey aphid fauna, which consist around 570 species, originally recorded from Turkey. Studies about Turkey aphid fauna dated back to beginning ofthe 1990’s and during last two decades more studies have been conducted. It has been clearly shown that any detailed study carriedout by aphid specialist team added non-ignorable number of aphid species to Turkey aphid fauna, recently completed each 3 detailedprojects contributed about 10% new records. There are still large unexplored areas waiting for to be studied and also no sufficientdatabase about how much aphid caused agricultural crop loose in Turkey. Recent prediction made by various research group clearlypointed out that current composition does not reflect the real situation of Turkey aphid fauna. Furthermore, recent climatic changesare going to influence both composition and agricultural damage level of the aphid species. There should be more research institutesand coordination between them to find out present composition and clearly emphasize agricultural importance of aphid species inTurkey.

The Aphid Fauna (Hemiptera:Aphidoidea) and Host Plants of The Büyükada Island (İstanbul, Turkey)
(2021) Beğen, Hayal Akyıldırım; Görür, Gazi
About 5100 aphid (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) species that feed on different host plants have spread all over the world. About 5000 aphid taxon feed on different plant species. Aphids are small, soft-bodied and one of the sap-feeding insect groups and also can damage almost all plants. Some aphid species are specific to only one host plant, while some feed on numerous host plants. In this study, aphid fauna and host plants of aphids were determined in Büyükada islands of İstanbul was determined in this study. Aphid species were distributed from cultivated plants, wild trees and shrubs in the area. During these study, 150 aphid samples were collected in the area. Apterae and alatae individuals of aphid samples were collected as much as possible from aphid colonies on cultivated and ornamental plants. 43 aphid taxa including two new records Turkey aphid fauna (1 family, 6 subfamilya, 6 tribus ve 23 genus) were determined on 46 different plant species at the end of the study. Malva neglecta, Nerium oleander, and Pinus spp. are the most sampled plant species. Aphis craccivora, Aphis fabae, and A. spiracola are the most determined aphid species in the area. All defined aphid species are the first records for the Büyükada island. Findings of the presented study and other recent studies showed that with the detailed studies, Turkey aphid fauna will be substantially increased thanks to the more detailed local studies.
