Öğe An educational software package for Thyristor Switched Reactive Power Compensators using Matlab/Simulink(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2010) Gelen, Ayetuel; Yalcinoz, TankutIn this paper, an educational software package called TSCOM (Thyristor Switched Reactive Power Compensators) has been developed. The TSCOM software package contains simulation models of Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) and Thyristor Switched Reactor (TSR)based Static VAr Compensator (SVC) which are two of the shunt Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. The design and simulations of TSC and TSR-based SVC are proposed using the Matlab/Simulink 7.04 (R) and SimPowersystems. The TSC and TSR-based SVC devices are demonstrated at two bus, three bus, infinite-bus, single-phase, three-phase, static load, dynamic load and stair-case load conditions. The effects of TSC and TSR-based SVC devices on load voltage are also analyzed. Student feedback indicates that this package is user-friendly and considerably effective for students and researchers to study theory of switched compensators, the reactive power control and voltage regulation. The proposed package will help to design the practical prototypes for students and researchers. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Torque-speed characteristics are obtained for different values of switching frequency to demonstrate its effect on the linearity of the characteristic. The proposed simulation model is developed as a part of a software laboratory to support and enhance undergraduate electric machinery courses at Nigde University, Nigde, Turkey.Öğe Experimental Studies of a Scaled-Down TSC Prototype for Voltage Regulation and Compensation(PRAISE WORTHY PRIZE SRL, 2010) Gelen, Ayetuel; Yalcinoz, TankutIn this paper, a prototype of Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC), which is one of shunt Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices, has been developed The design and testing of TSC are verified in the Power Systems Research Laboratory at Nigde University. The TSC device is studied at two-bus, three-bus and single machine infinite bus (SMIB) systems for three-phase static load conditions. The effects of the TSC device on load voltages are also analyzed The experiment results show that significant improvement on reactive power compensation and voltage regulation is achieved by using TSC. The design and testing of both a TSR-based SVC and a TCR-based SVC are accomplished in the Power Systems Research Laboratory of Nigde University. The TSR-based SVC and TCR-based SVC devices are studied in three-bus and single machine infinite bus systems for three-phase static load conditions. The effects of TSR-based SVC and TCR-based SVC devices on load voltages are also analyzed. Experimental results show that significant improvement in reactive power compensation and voltage regulation is achieved by using TSR-based SVC and TCR-based SVC.Öğe Investigation of Damping Effect of Power System Stabilizer in the Presence of Communication Delays(IEEE, 2008) Ayasun, Saffet; Gelen, AyetuelThis paper investigates the effect of time delays on the stability of a generator excitation control system compensated with a power system stabilizer (PSS) to damp the system oscillations. The time delays are due to the use of measurement devices and communication links for data transfer. The maximum amount of time delay known as delay margin that the system can tolerate without becoming unstable is determined using Matlab/Simulink. It is found that the addition of a PSS to the excitation system increases the delay margin and improves the system damping significantly.Öğe PI CONTROL OF THYRISTOR SWITCHED CAPACITOR (TSC) AND THYRISTOR SWITCHED REACTOR-BASED STATIC VAr COMPENSATOR (TSR-BASED SVC)(GAZI UNIV, FAC ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE, 2009) Gelen, Ayetuel; Yalcinoz, TankutTogether with the improvement in current and voltage handling capacities of power electronic devices, different type controllers have been increasingly used for efficient shunt and series compensation. The most promising controllers based on power electronics are known as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. In this study, the effects of two of shunt FACTS devices, which are Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) and Thyristor Switched Reactor (TSR)-based Static VAr Compensator (SVC) on load bus voltage are investigated. Six Pulse Generator and PI Controller are used to control firing angles of TSC and TSR-based SVC. These compensators are simulated by using Matlab/Simulink, Power Systems Toolbox. Analyzed the studied three phase power system consists of two buses, a static load and a long transmission line model. The simulation results show that PI controller can be easily applicable to these type compensators.Öğe Realization of Power Electronic Converter Based DC Motor Speed Control Methods Using MATLAB/Simulink(TEMPUS PUBLICATIONS, 2009) Gelen, Ayetuel; Ayasun, SaffetThe MATLAB/Simulink realization of DC motor speed control methods is achieved here by controlling the voltage applied to the armature circuit using various controlled and uncontrolled power electronic converters. The power electronic converters used in simulation models include full-bridge diode rectifier, half controlled rectifier and pulse width modulated (PWM) chopper. These Simulation models are developed as a part of a software laboratory to support and enhance undergraduate electric machinery courses at Nigde University, Turkey.Öğe Stability analysis of a generator excitation control system with time delays(SPRINGER, 2010) Ayasun, Saffet; Gelen, AyetuelThis paper investigates the effect of time delays on the stability of generator excitation control system. The time delays are due to the use of measurement devices, communication links for data transfer, and controller processing time. The stability with respect to the time delay is theoretically analyzed and a formula to determine the maximum amount of time delay known as delay margin that the system can tolerate without losing its stability is presented. It is found that the excitation control system becomes unstable when the time delay crosses certain critical values, delay margins for stability. The time-domain simulations of Matlab/Simulink are used to validate theoretical delay margin results.Öğe THE BEHAVIOR OF THYRISTOR SWITCHED CAPACITOR (TSC) INSTALLED IN AN INFINITE BUS SYSTEM(IEEE, 2009) Gelen, Ayetuel; Yalcinoz, TankutThis paper examines the effects of Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) on load voltage in a single-machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. The modeling and simulation of TSC are verified using the Matlab/Simulink 7.04@ and SimPowerSystems Blockset. The studied power system consists of a synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus and a static load. The results show that improvement on reactive power compensation and load bus voltage regulation could be achieved by using the TSC. Also, the test system with TSC is not needed a harmonic filter and low frequency voltage oscillations are damped by using TSC.
