Öğe Attachment and emotional regulation: examining the role of prefrontal cortex functions, executive functions, and mindfulness in their relationship(Springer Heidelberg, 2023) Sahin, Nesrin Hisli; Tasso, Anthony F.; Guler, MuratAttachment is a prominent area of psychological research, with its relevance linked to executive functions, mindfulness, and emotional regulation. The purpose of this study is to examine this relationship among these aforementioned four constructs and propose a model to be tested in the future. Based on the current trends using the Interpersonal Neurobiology approach, which assumes prefrontal cortex functions to include other socioemotional resources such as empathy, morality, insight, behavior, and body regulation. Our study included prefrontal cortical functions alongside executive functions. The assessment instruments used were Attachment-Based Cognitive Representations Scale, Prefrontal Cortex Functions Scale, Webexec, Five Facet Mindfulness Scale, and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. We hypothesized that attachment would be the strongest predictor of emotional regulation. The participants in the study were 539 college students (mean = 20.21; sd = 1.57); (68% female and 32%, male). Our a priori research hypothesis was supported, with an additional finding that trait mindfulness was also a significant predictor. The strongest correlations with attachment styles were with trait mindfulness and emotional regulation. We conducted path analyses of two different models for secure and insecure attachment. The path analyses showed that secure attachment scores were negatively related, and insecure attachment scores were positively related to difficulties in emotional regulation scores. Furthermore, trait mindfulness and prefrontal cortex functions also mediated this relationship. However, there was no significant relationship between executive functions and difficulties in emotional regulation scores, even though it was significantly related to attachment. Results and implications are discussed.Öğe Exploring Relational Needs on Using Social Network Sites(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2022) Cetin, Fatih; Paliszkiewicz, Joanna; Guler, Murat; Koksal, Onur; Cieciora, MalgorzataThe main purpose of this study is to explore the influences of factors on using SNSs that arise from the basic need of belonging to emotional disclosure then the intention to make connections to others. The participants of this study were 540 university students from Turkey and Poland. The results showed that the need to belong is a significant predictor of usage intensity of SNSs, the consecutive influences of emotion disclosure and make connection intention significantly mediate this relationship, and some of these direct and indirect relationships are varying in the different collectivism conditions. All these findings were discussed according to the related theories and the findings in the literature with suggestions for future studies.Öğe Proactive personality and job performance during cross-cultural service encounters: a moderated mediation model(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2023) Koksal, Onur; Guler, Murat; Cetin, Fatih; Sahin, FarukPurposeDrawing on the person-environment fit theory, in this paper the authors aim to propose and test a moderated mediation model that examines the relationships among proactive personality and job performance, cultural intelligence and emotional intelligence.Design/methodology/approachThe authors collected the multisource data from a total of 120 hotel service employees and the employees' immediate supervisors. The authors used the PROCESS, an SPSS macro, to conduct multiple regression analyses to test this moderated mediation model.FindingsThe results suggest that cultural intelligence mediates the relationship between proactive personality and job performance during cross-cultural service encounters. Furthermore, the indirect effect of proactive personality on job performance during cross-cultural service encounters via cultural intelligence is stronger for service employees who are high in emotional intelligence.Practical implicationsThis study has several implications for hospitality management in terms of developing effective strategies to foster cultural and emotional intelligence of service employees and improve the employees' performance.Originality/valueConsidering the limited number of studies showing why, how and in which situations personality can enhance performance, this study contributes to the literature by revealing the effect of proactive personality on the performance of service employees through important constructs such as cultural intelligence and emotional intelligence.Öğe The moderating role of surface and deep acting on the relationship between natural emotional labor and organizational commitment(Springer, 2023) Guler, Murat; Ocak, Metin; Koksal, OnurThe literature on emotional labor predominantly tends to consider the forms of emotional labor as independent and alternative structures. Nonetheless, considering the emotional labor forms as complementary strategies rather than investigating each on its own may improve our understanding of the personal and organizational outcomes of the emotional labor concept. This study examined the relationship between natural emotional labor and organizational commitment and the moderating role of surface and deep acting on this relationship. For that purpose, quantitative data were collected from 332 participants by the questionnaire method. Statistical analysis revealed that natural emotional labor is positively associated with organizational commitment, and this relationship is moderated by surface acting. It was found that surface acting strengthens the relationship between natural emotional labor and organizational commitment, but the moderating role of deep acting is not significant. The findings are discussed in the context of the literature.
