Öğe Analysis of wind energy potential and Weibull parameter estimation methods: a case study from Turkey(Springer, 2020) Gungor, A.; Gokcek, M.; Ucar, H.; Arabaci, E.; Akyuz, A.A detailed investigation of the wind characteristics is an indispensable process for the wind energy potential for installing of wind power plants. Choosing the wind speed distribution that provides the better fit to the data is of great advantages. The present study investigates the appropriateness of four different numerical methods for forecasting the Weibull distribution parameters using wind speed information from Izmir-Turkey. To determine the robustness of the methods, the root-mean-square error, the coefficient of determination, and the Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests have been used. In addition, an economic analysis to represent probability of installing wind turbines ranging between 800 and 4200 kW in site has been also done. The results demonstrate that the standard deviation-mean wind speed method is the most appropriate. Moreover, the estimated cost of electricity from wind was calculated as US$0.0111/kWh.Öğe The characteristics that define wind as an energy source(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2008) Gungor, A.; Eskin, N.In many countries, present energy resources are insufficient, and the need for energy is growing rapidly. These countries do not possess enough conventional fossil fuel reserves but possesses rich renewable energy resources. Wind energy is one of the most significant and rapidly developing renewable energy sources in the world, and it provides a clean energy resource. This study is aimed at summarizing the studies carried out on the characteristics that define wind as an energy source, to detect insufficiencies of these studies, and to come up with new suggestions concerning wind energy implementations and future wind energy production plans. In order to provide a broad wind resource assessment, the wind characteristics must be studied in detail at each site separately. Considering the development of wind energy in the country, it may be concluded that the number of wind power plant installations will considerably increase in the future.
