    An etymological review of the amphibians of Türkiye

    Here, we present the etymology of the Latin binomials of all Turkish amphibian genera and species. According to our review, the names are mostly given according to the characteristics and features of the species or in honor of a person. Reviewing the etymologies of the Latin names of amphibian species living in Türkiye and compiling information and heritage will be very useful, especially for Turkish herpetology. © Biharean Biologist, Oradea, Romania, 2022.

    Biodiversity in Urban environments of Ordu City and Nearby Areas: Mammals, Birds, Reptiles and Amphibians

    The present paper provides the first species list of the fauna of terrestrial vertebrates of Ordu, Turkey. A survey for determination of the fauna was conducted between 2011 and 2015 in Ordu and the immediate vicinity. The field studies were made using several different techniques including; visual, wildlife photography and passive infrared camera traps. Previous records and wildlife observations around Ordu city published by professional wildlife photographers were also included. Overall, we determined 219 terrestrial vertebrate species (168 birds, 40 mammals, 7 reptiles, and 4 amphibians), some of them being low conservation concern. Among the most remarkable species from the conservation point of view, Emys orbicularis (Reptilia), Aythya nyroca, Puffinus yelkouan, Pelecanus crispus, Saxicola maurus, Tetrax tetrax (Aves), Rhinolophus euryale, Miniopterus schreibersii, Lutra lutra (Mammalia) come into prominence. The third record of the Rustic Bunting (Emberiza rustica) for Turkey is made in this study. In the Blacksea region of Turkey, although the most records of Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) is largely confined to mountainous regions, it was captured by the photo-traps in the urban areas. Our results suggest that biodiversity of terrestrial vertebrates in Ordu and immediate vicinity is still rich, and adjacent environments between urban and wild habitats are important in terms of conservation of the urban biodiversity.

    Ethological observations on the breeding behavior of the Isabelline Wheatear, Oenanthe isabellina (Temminck, 1829) and its competition and mutualistic relationship with the ground squirrels of the genus Spermophilus Cuvier, 1825

    This study presents findings based on the observations related to the defensive mutualistic relationship between Oenanthe isabellina (Temminck, 1829) and ground squirrels of the genus Spermophilus Cuvier, 1825. Oenanthe isabellina acted as an alarm bell to avoid predators from its offspring and indirectly from the Spermophilus species. Thus, the ground squirrel gained time to escape from the predator into its hole. On the other hand, the ground squirrel offers a safer underground nest to the bird for its eggs and offspring in return for early warning service. In addition, this symbiotic relationship was sometimes seen to become a competition between the bird-mammal couple, and it even at times turned into a form of mobbing. © Biharean Biologist, Oradea, Romania, 2022.

    New distribution records of Bohemian Waxwing Bombycilla garrulus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Turkey

    The Bohemian Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus Linnaeus, 1758) is a rare and high irregular migrant in Turkey. Most of records from the country have been taken in winter season. In this study, four winter and one spring observations were reported from five new localities.     Notes on the mammals found in Kazda?i National Park and its environs

    The present study is based on species collected and observed in Kazda?i National Park and its surroundings. Field collections yielded 40 mammal species from 6 orders: Insectivora (4), Chiroptera (14), Lagomorpha (1), Rodentia (11), Carnivora (8), and Artiodactyla (2). Of the species recorded in this study, 6 were new records from north-west Anatolia: Sorex volnuchini, Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis emarginatus, Eptesicus serotinus, Hypsugo savii, and Microtus subterraneus. © TÜBİTAK.

    On the karyology, morphology and biology of Glis glis (Linnaeus, 1766) (Rodentia: Gliridae) in Iran

    For this study, 15 males and 13 females of Glis glis (Linnaeus, 1766) were captured from Gilan Province in southwest of the Caspian. We examined the karyotype of Glis glis from Iran for the first time, and found 2n=62, NF=124 and NFa=120. The X chromosome was metacentric and the Y chromosome was a dot-like acrocentric. It was determined that there were 12 nipples in females. Counts of embryos and newborns suggested a litter size range of 3-5 (n= 3). Iranian dormice have larger body and skull measurements than other populations from Europe and the Caucasus, and represent a subspecies G. g. persicus (Erxleben, 1777). The phallus and baculum properties and bio-ecological notes are given. ©Biharean Biologist, Oradea, Romania, 2021

    Records of Chromosomal Data of Some Scorpions (Arachnida: Scorpiones) from Turkey

    In this study, the karyological features of three species Mesobuthus eupeus and Mesobuthus gibbous was investigatedfrom the family Buthidae and Euscorpius (Euscorpius) aladaglarensis from the family Euscorpiidae, ranging in NiğdeProvince. As a result of karyological studies, it was determined that the diploid chromosome number of Mesobuthus eupeus,Mesobuthus gibbosus, and Euscorpius aladaglarensis as 2n= 20, 28 and 88 respectively. Two buthid species have holocentricchromosomes, while the euscorpiid species has monocentric chromosomes. During first meiotic division, we observedmultivalent in one male of E. aladaglarensis.

    Soaring bird migration in 2015 spring at Belen Pass, Hatay, Turkey

    We had monitored spring season soaring bird migration at Belen Pass between March 6th and May 20th, 2015. During the study, a total of 50082 soaring migratory birds were counted and 29 species belonging to five families of five orders were recorded. White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) was the most abundant species with 46525 individuals. It was followed by Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) with 1142 individuals, Common Crane (Grus grus) (Linnaeus, 1758) with 723 individuals, Lesser Spotted Eagle (Clanga pomarina) with 619 individuals, and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) with 274 individuals. Migration had gained pace between March 31st and April 2nd with the highest daily count on March 31st with 7160 individuals. Although altitude of migration was between 10 and 900 m, the soaring birds passed mostly between 400 and 500 m. © Biharean Biologist, Oradea, Romania, 2020.

    The vertebrate biodiversity of Turkey

    The present lists show that Turkish vertebrate fauna consists of 1728 species. Fish species form its half part (51.74%) with 530 marine and 402 inland fish species. However, the total number is 894, since 38 of them are living in salty, brackish, and freshwater. At the class level, Petromyzonti is represented by 4, Elasmobranchii by 65, Holocephali by 1, Actinopteri by 824, Amphibia by 36, Reptilia by 140, Aves by 485, and Mammalia by 173 species. A total number of 189 inland fish-1 Petromyzonti and 188 Actinopteri-13 amphibian, 20 reptile, and 5 mammal species are endemic to Turkey. The endemism rate out of the total vertebrate species is 13.14%. According to the given conservation status, at least five species are extinct, and 215 species are globally threatened. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. All rights reserved.
