Öğe Environmental Ethics Education as a Tool for the Prevention of Environmental Problems in the Community(European Center Sustainable Development, 2014) Karatas, AbdullahToday environmental problems have reached very important and serious levels. Destroyed nature and contaminated earth by people day to day reveals this reality in the best way. People are responsible for the creation of this negative picture. However, people are dependent on their environment for living like all other creatures and also helpless against the environmental problems caused by themselves. Deterrent laws and fines are also inadequate for the prevention of environmental problems. People need to be conscious about the environment more than anything else. In this respect environmental ethics education will be able to guide them. The community members, becoming more conscious by environmental ethics education can question their relationship with the environment again and behave more environmentally friendly. For sustainability in the earth, people should learn how to behave ethically towards other creatures and nature. With this theoretical study, the importance of environmental ethics education for the community within the context of non-formal education will be discussed.Öğe Perceptions of Doctoral Students: Satisfaction, Difficulties, Gained Skills and Performance in Publishing in Academic Journals(Deomed Publ, Istanbul, 2021) Bozkurt, Veysel; Yalcinkaya, Elvan; Karatas, Abdullah; Talas, Mustafa; Sahin, ArzuThe aim of this study was to examine the perceptions of doctoral students about the content of doctoral programs, faculty and doctoral field. It was also aimed at determining the indicators that affect doctoral students' performance in getting published in academic journals. For this purpose, 1367 doctoral students from 15 different universities were administered a Doctoral Education Evaluation Survey face-to-face and online. Principal component analysis revealed 4 factors. The majority of doctoral students at the course stage are satisfied with the content of the doctoral program, the faculty members and the doctoral field. As the students' awareness increases over time, their complaints increase. The dissatisfaction of doctoral students reaches the highest level, at the proficiency stage. Furthermore, from the second year on, there is a decline in the satisfaction of doctoral students with the content of the doctoral programs, with the faculty members and the opportunities offered by the doctoral field, to a statistically significant extent. Especially those working in the social sciences complain that research methods are not taught enough. Binary logistic regression was applied to determine the indicators affecting the publication performance of the doctoral students in academic journals. The participation of doctoral students in international academic symposiums emerged as the most important indicator. The other predictive variables are doctoral students' participation in a project, working as a research assistant at the university, and completion of the course stage. Encouraging the participation of doctoral students in academic congresses with their advisors or their colleagues will contribute to increasing their publication performance.Öğe THE IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITIES(IATED-INT ASSOC TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION A& DEVELOPMENT, 2014) Karatas, Abdullah; Chova, LG; Martinez, AL; Torres, ICAntropo-centric perspective is the real reason of the emergence of global environmental problems. Extinction of species, desertification and pollution clearly reveals this reality. However, like all the other living species human being is a living creature too and needs a clean and sustainable environment to live. Environmental ethics which is related to moral relationship between people and their natural environment emerges as a key concept at this point. Antropo-centric perspective can be converted into eco-centeric one via environmental ethics and people's perspectives towards the environment and environmental values can be changed positively. Evironmental ethics education can show the direction to the works to be done in this regard. Particularly at the universities as important places in people's scientific and social development, young people taking both vocational and environmental ethics eduction will not be the source of environmental problems but part of the solution when they begin their professional career. In this theoretical study, the importance of environmental ethics education for the university students will be emphasized.Öğe The Relationship between Bioculture and Bioenvironment(KAMLA-RAJ ENTERPRISES, 2014) Karatas, AbdullahToday's environmental problems adversely affect all living beings around the world. Gradual environmental pollution, which consumes natural things and changes climatic conditions, also causes acid rain. The cause of this adverse effect is directly related to anthropocentrism. Despite all these things, human beings continue to destroy and consume nature for their own interests. However, humans are part of nature, like all other creatures. Invariably, human beings cut the branch they are sitting on. Because of this reason, bioculture which is a cultural structure based on the sustainability of life, should be implemented in all segments of the society. Obviously, the destruction of the bioenvironment is inevitable in a society deprived of such a cultural structure. Education is the key concept for the creation of this structure.Öğe The Role of Faculties of Education in Increasing Sustainable Environmental Awareness of Society(European Center Sustainable Development, 2013) Karatas, AbdullahEnvironmental problems show their negative effects globally today. Increasing pollution and changing climatic conditions reveal this situation clearly. Environmental problems, affecting the future of all living things, are connected with the incorrect relations between man and nature. People have become alienated from nature seeing it as an endless source and as a result nature has become a tool for achieving anthropocentric objectives. It can be said that such an anthropocentric view is the real cause of environmental problems, but human and nature harmony should be structured immediately because environmental problems have reached to serious position. Consequently, human being is a living creature and he needs healthy and reliable environment to live like all other creatures. Unless changing anthropocentric view of people towards nature, law and fines will also be helpless. At this point, education plays a very important mission. Because it is possible to change people's behavior and perspectives positively through education. For the creation of awareness about the importance of protecting environment in society, faculties of education as teacher training institutions are of great importance. Teachers, preparing generations for future and so shaping the future of a society, receive their professional qualification and requirements for becoming a teacher from faculties of education, so teacher candidates should be educated very well. Teacher candidates from all disciplines, educated with environmental consciousness, will be able to transfer this consciousness to their students when they graduate. Generations, given the love of nature at an early age by their teachers, can be eco-friendly individuals in the future and shed light on environmental problems. This theoretical study aims to put forward the role of faculties of education in increasing sustainable environmental awareness of society.
