PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTORS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE IN TURKISH NURSING HOMES: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY
(PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL PUBLICATIONS, 2009) Kocaoez, Semra; Bilgili, Naile; Eroqlu, Kafiye
Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of urinary incontinence (UI) in nursing home residents in the capital city of Turkey. Methodology: In this cross-sectional study, 394 elderly people (244 women and 150 men), aged over 60 years were interviewed in nursing homes. A structured questionnaire and face to face interviews were used as the instrument for data collection. Results: The overall prevalence of UI was 22.8% (n=90) when defined as "the involuntary loss of urine at least twice a month". Among elderly people, 33 (36.3%) had urge, 29 (31.9%) stress and 5 (5.5%) mixed type UI. UI was significantly associated with body mass index, recurrent lower urinary tract infections, heart disease, endocrine disorders, respiratory diseases and urinary system diseases. Conclusions: Urinary incontinence affects approximately one of four elderly people in Turkish nursing homes. The results underscore the need for planning prevention and treatment strategies for UI.

The effect of endometriosis on anxiety and the Quality of Life in women
(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2024) Arslan, Elif Buesra; Kocaoez, Semra; Kizilirmak, Aynur
This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 420 women. The data were collected by using the Descriptive Information Form, SF-36 Quality of Life Scale (QoLS) and State Anxiety Inventory (SAI). The data were evaluated with Mann-Whitney U-test, Student's t-test and Pearson correlation analysis. Endometriosis had been diagnosed in 12.1% of the women. The score medians obtained by the women with endometriosis from the pain and physical role difficulty sub-dimensions of the QoLS were found to be significantly lower than those obtained by women without endometriosis. The presence of endometriosis was found not to affect the state anxiety in the women. A weak or moderately significant negative relationship was found between the number and onset time of the symptoms and certain sub-dimensions of the QoLS in the women with endometriosis.
