Öğe A test of Hirschi's social bonding theory - Juvenile delinquency in the high schools of Ankara, Turkey(SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, 2006) Ozbay, Ozden; Ozcan, Yusuf ZiyaTravis Hirschi's social bonding theory has mostly been tested in the West. In this study, the theory is tested on juvenile delinquency in a developing country, Turkey. Data were gathered from 1,710 high school students in Ankara by using two-stage stratified cluster sampling. Factor analysis was employed to determine the dimensions of juvenile delinquency (assault, school delinquency, and public disturbance), and regression analysis was used to test the theory. Similar to some other traditional societies, the social bonding theory plays an important role in the explanation of juvenile delinquency in Turkey.Öğe Classic strain theory and gender - The case of Turkey(SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, 2006) Ozbay, Ozden; Ozcan, Yusuf ZiyaA test of classic strain theory on gender in relation to assault, school delinquency, and public disturbance is investigated in high schools in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Data for the study, including class variables, involve a two-stage stratified cluster sample of high school students. The findings show that various strain and class measures do not appear to be associated consistently with delinquency and gender, except for perceived blocked opportunity for females. The effects of strain and class variables on delinquent acts are similar for both genders, except for the middle social class of males. The most striking finding is that social class is associated positively with juvenile delinquency: Lower-class youth are less likely to commit assault, school delinquency, and public disturbance.Öğe Does social capital deter youth from cheating, alcohol use, and violence in Turkey? Bringing torpil in(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2008) Ozbay, OzdenThe objective of this study was to explore the link between social capital and cheating, alcohol use, and violence using a self-reported survey involving a sample of Turkish university students. The relatively comprehensive measures of social capital included both parental social capital (membership in organizations, political engagement, book/newspaper readership, parental control over the youth's social network, and religion) and youth social capital (civic intolerance, religion, influential connection, social exchange among classmates, membership in organizations, trust, and voting). Findings tended to indicate that most social capital measures were not consistently significant and that social capital had both negative and positive aspects. Social capital deprivation, a 'new' concept, was for the first time used and tested: it had a positive impact on deviant behavior. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The primary findings indicated support for the theory net of the impacts of strain, deterrence, differential association, and social bonding theories: the greater the low self-control, the greater the deviance. Among the dimensions of self-control, risk seeking had the greatest impact on deviance. Self-control was not the cause of deviant behavior. While self-control theory. played a similar role for both male and female youths, this was not the case with strain and social bonding theories. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
