Foreign Langauge Instructors' Attitudes towards Learner Autonomy in Foreign Language Learning
(PEGEM AKAD YAYINCILIK EGITIM DANISMANLIK HIZMETLERI TIC LTD STI, 2015) Ozdere, Mustafa
Learner autonomy has been a buzz word in foreign language education in the past decades. Learner autonomy can be defined as the situation in which learners accept the overall responsibility regarding their own learning. In formal learning contexts, teachers are expected to share some instructional responsibilities with students, acquire new roles and lead their students accordingly for the promotion of learner autonomy. The purpose of this study is to determine if there has been a change in the foreign language instructors' attitudes towards learner autonomy and sharing some instructional responsibilities with their students throughout time at Nigde University. It also aims to determine the direction and the possible causes of this change. For this study, trend survey study design was employed. 25 instructors participated the study. Data for these two studies was collected by a questionnaire designed on a 5 point Likert-Scale consisting of 13 main questions. The overall results of the study indicated that foreign language instructors' attitudes towards learner autonomy have changed within time in a positive way. The possible reasons for this change could be the development of the facilities, opportunities for professional development, increase in the awareness regarding the concept, cultural and traditional changes in attitudes towards learning a foreign language.

The Analysis of the Factors That Weaken Engineering Students' Engagement and Lead Them to Transfer to Other Universities
(Cukurova Univ, 2018) Boyaci, Adnan; Karacabey, Mehmet Fatih; Ozdere, Mustafa; Oz, Yakup
The purpose of current study is to analyze the factors that weaken students' engagement and lead them to transfer to other universities in Turkey. This study focuses on the engagement of engineering students with a qualitative descriptive design. Participants of the study are composed of the total 13 students who had been transferred from some other universities and enrolled in a new university in different engineering departments. Participants were selected by criterion and snowball sampling methods. In the study, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. From the data, three main themes were emerged as student level factors, institution level factors and environmental factors weakening student engagement and leading them to transfer. When compared with the western college engagement and retention literature, it was found that there are several different factors related to educational aspirations, program characteristics, faculty-student interaction and external environment (characteristics of the city the university located in). Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations for universities, policy makers and researchers were provided.

The attitudes of teachers towards multicultural education
(Eurasian Society of Educational Research, 2019) Karacabey, Mehmet Fatih; Ozdere, Mustafa; Bozkus, Kivanc
The purpose of this study is to determine the teachers' attitudes toward multicultural education. This is a survey study and the participants of the study were 248 teachers who are teaching Turkish to the Syrian immigrants in Sanliurfa. The data for this study was collected through a 5-point Likert scale called "Teachers' Multicultural Attitude Scale". According to findings, it is determined that teachers have positive attitudes towards multicultural education. Their attitudes do not differ in a statistically significant way according to their gender, mother tongue, and professional seniority. Literature teachers were found to have more positive attitudes than class teachers. Based on the findings, it can be suggested that more research is needed on how to develop, alter teaching methods and programs according to multicultural education and why teachers of certain subjects have a more positive attitude towards multicultural education. Also, studies that investigate if teachers’ attitudes towards multicultural education affect students’ academic achievement, social adaptation processes and so on may provide useful information. The participation of teachers in cultural exchange programs, formal education, courses may be useful to raise their awareness and competency on multicultural education. © 2018 Eurasian Society of Educational Research.
