Öğe Assertiveness as the Predictor of Adjustment to University Life amongst University Students(Gate Assoc Teaching & Education-Gate, Switzerland, 2019) Parmaksiz, IzzetThe main purpose of this study was to examine whether or not assertiveness predicted adjustment to university by determining university students' adjustment levels to university. The study was conducted with first-year students who were attending a university in Central Anatolia in 2018. A total of 438 students, 322 females and 116 males, participated in the study. The data were collected using the University Life Scale, the Assertiveness Scale and the Personal Information Form developed by the researcher. For data analysis, t-test was employed for binary variables, and one-way ANOVA was employed for multiple variables. Whether or not students' assertiveness predicted adjustment to university was determined by regression analysis. The study findings revealed that students' sex, high school they graduated from, the number of their siblings, their source of income, social activity they engaged in prior to university and their accommodations did not have effect on their adjustment to university. However, choosing their major willingly, perceiving their income as sufficient, the city they lived in and perception of their economic situation had effects on their adjustment to university. Furthermore, the study determined that the university students' assertiveness total scores predicted their adjustment to university, emotional adjustment, personal adjustment, adjustment to the opposite sex, social adjustment, academic adjustment and total adjustment scores.Öğe The effect of phubbing, a behavioral problem, on academic procrastination: The mediating and moderating role of academic self-efficacy(Wiley, 2023) Parmaksiz, IzzetOur preoccupation with smartphones affects our attitudes. Our changing attitudes also create disruptions in our daily routines. Smartphones, the most common technological device we use, have exposed individuals to phubbing behavior. The behavioral problem we define as phubbing causes disruptions and procrastination in our academic responsibilities. In this study, the relationship between phubbing frequency and academic procrastination tendencies of students and the effect of academic self-efficacy on this relationship were performed. For this purpose, in this study, the mediator and moderator role of academic self-efficacy in the relationship between academic procrastination and phubbing was examined. The study group of the research consisted of 518 students in late adolescence from Turkey. 323 (62.4%) of the participants were females and 195 (37.6%) of them were males (Mage = 19.4 years). They completed questionnaires measuring phubbing tendency, academic procrastination, academic self-efficacy, and personal information form. It was found that academic self-efficacy was a partial mediator in the relationship between academic procrastination and phubbing. In addition, academic self-efficacy also had a moderator effect. According to these results, it can be said that the acquisition of academic self-efficacy can reduce the negative effects of phubbing, which is a behavioral problem, and the tendency to academic procrastination.Öğe The Effects of Optimism, Altruism and Marital Status on the Psychological Resilience(Dergipark Akad, 2020) Parmaksiz, IzzetThe aim of this study was to determine the strength of optimism and altruism in predicting psychological resilience. The sample consists of 389 (Female: 198, Male: 191) adult participants living in Central Anatolia. In this study, Optimism Scale, Altruism Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale and personal information form developed by the researcher were used. Hierarchical regression analysis, t test and ANOVA and Pearson correlation were used to analyze the data. Marital status was included as a dummy variable in regression analysis. A positive significant relationship was found between the quantitative variables included in the regression analysis. In the analyzes, it was found that marital status significantly differentiated psychological resilience scores. On the other hand, gender, place of living, education level and economic status did not differ significantly. In the regression analysis, it was found that the optimism, altruistic behavior and marital status of the participants predicted their psychological resilience. It is thought that adding optimistic and altruistic activities to the theoretical and practical trainings of protective and preventive mental health service individuals will give beneficial results. Social support strengthens the individual in terms of mental health and removes it from loneliness. Activities can be carried out to raise awareness of individuals.Öğe The mediating role of personality traits on the relationship between academic self-efficacy and digital addiction(Springer, 2022) Parmaksiz, IzzetThe purpose of the study was to examine whether personality traits had a mediator role on the relationship between university students' digital addiction behaviour and academic self-efficacy. The study sample consisted of 1348 students (876 females and 472 males) who were chosen through random sampling from university students who from different universities in Turkey. For data collection, Digital Addiction Scale, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, Adjective Based Personality Test, and personal information form have been used. The results of the study indicate that personality traits fully mediate the relationship between digital addiction and academic self-efficacy.Öğe The mediator role of effective communication skills on the relationship between phubbing tendencies and marriage satisfaction in married individuals(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Kilicarslan, Suat; Parmaksiz, IzzetThe aim of this research is to examine the mediator role of communication skills on the relationship between phubbing tendencies and marital satisfaction of married individuals. The sample of the study consisted of 712 adult married individuals from some cities in the Central Anatolian region of Turkey. 347 (48.7%) of the par-ticipants were female and 365 (51.3%) were male. The average age of the participants is 37.45. Marriage Satisfaction Scale, Phubbing Scale and Effective Communication Skills Scale were used as data collection tools. Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple mediation analysis (SPSS PROCESS macro (version 3.5-model 4)) techniques were used in the analysis of the data. There were significant negative correlation between the sub-dimensions of communication skills (ego-developing language, effective listening, self revelation, empathy, I-language) and phubbing; they were also found to be significantly positively correlated with marital satisfaction. Analysis results showed that phubbing significantly and negatively predicted marital satisfaction, and when effective communication skills were included in the analysis, the relationship between these two variables became nonsense. This result shows that communication skills are a full mediator on the relationship between phubbing and marital satisfaction in married individuals.Öğe The relationship between assertiveness and separation-individuation in adolescents(Pegem Akad Yayincilik Egitim Danismanlik Hizmetleri Tic Ltd Sti, 2020) Parmaksiz, Izzet; Kilicarslan, SuatThis study aims to determine whether assertiveness predicts restriction anxiety, separation anxiety and expectation of rejection, which are the sub-dimensions of Separation-Individuation Test of Adolescence. The study was conducted with high school students in a Central Anatolian city during the second semester of the 20182019 academic year. A total of 488 students, 324 girls and 164 boys, participated in the study. Regression, pearson correlation and t test were used in the analysis of the data obtained T-test results indicated that sex significantly differentiated the scores of separation anxiety while it did not differentiate the scores of restriction anxiety and expectation of rejection. Correlation analysis showed that there was a negative relationship between assertiveness level of adolescents and level of separation-individuation (restriction anxiety, separation anxiety and expectation of rejection). Regression analysis revealed that assertiveness was the negative predictor of separation anxiety, expectation of rejection and restriction anxiety. These results indicate that, for a healthy development in adolescence, a critical period in personality development, becoming assertive and escaping passiveness can have a significant contribution to the personality development of the individual. The findings of the research were discussed and interpreted within the framework of the literature and suggestions were made to researchers and practitioners.Öğe Violence in Couple Relationships: Relational Factors, Family of Origin Experiences and Coping Strategies(Ani Publishing, 2020) Kilicarslan, Suat; Parmaksiz, IzzetViolence in couple relationships, both in Turkey and in the world, is amongst the major problems. There is a need for different studies revealing what affects the relationships between couples and how they are affected, how the relationships in the family origin of individuals are reflected on the relationships between couples and how to deal with this problem between couples. In this context, in this study, the causes of violence in couple relationships, strategies of coping with violence in the couple's relationship, and the effects of the origin family experiences of the couple on the couple relationship, unlike other studies in the literature, were examined. This study is a descriptive study and phenomenology, a qualitative research type, was used as the research design. The research data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, which are qualitative research methods. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research, it has been revealed that the violence experienced by married individuals in couple relationships reflects not only individual characteristics of individuals but also the relational experiences of couples and intergenerational family interaction.
