    Social and political dimension of stigmatization: The development of Natasha and Maria images for immigrants in Istanbul

    This study aims at understanding how the perceptions about migrants have been created and transferred into daily life as a stigmatization by means of public perception, media and state law implementations. The focus would be briefly what kind of consequences these perceptions and stigmatization might lead. First section will examine the background of migration to Turkey briefly and make a summary of migration towards Turkey by 90s. Second section will briefly evaluate the preferential legal framework, which constitutes the base for official discourse differentiating the migrants and implementations of security forces that can be described as discriminatory. The third section deals with the impact of perceptions influential in both formation and reproduction of inclusive and exclusive practices towards migrant women. Additionally, impact of public perception in classifying the migrants and migratory processes would be dealt in this section.

    Sustainable Illegality: Gagauz Women in Istanbul

    This study deals with survival strategies of illegal migrants in Turkey. It aims to provide an explanation for the efforts to keep illegality sustainable for one specific ethnic/national group-that is, the Gagauz of Moldova, who are of Turkish ethnic origin. In order to explicate the advantages of Turkish ethnic origin, I will focus on their preferential treatment at state-law level and in terms of the implementation of the law by police officers. In a remarkable way, the juridical framework has introduced legal ways of dealing with the illegality of ethnically Turkish migrants. From the viewpoint of migration, the presence of strategic tools of illegality forces us to ask not so much law-related questions, but to turn to a sociological inquiry of how and why they overstay their visas. Therefore, this study concludes that it is the social processes behind their illegality, rather than its form, that is more important for our understanding of the migrants' survival strategies in destination countries.

    Voices from a hidden people: Precarious lives and discrimination in Turkish sugar industry

    The aim of this study is to reveal the connections between precarious work and discrimination patterns in Turkey, drawing particular attention to the increasing use of subcontracting in the public sector. Subcontracting has been suggested as a liberal solution to labour effectiveness that is substantially concretised in further surplus value accumulation. This suggestion has been inextricably associated with disposing of labour features hereto valid such as a settled income, a guarantee of minimum standards, protection against unfair dismissal, promotion opportunities, a regular working day and working week, collective bargaining, and the provision of social services. This alteration has inevitably exposed labour to further exploitative competition on the one hand and fragmented the labour source by expanding it to further fragile categories on the other. Thus, subcontracting has immediate consequences not only for precarisation of work, but also for discriminatory practices in workplaces. The study's results indicate that subcontracting in Turkey essentially meant a return to traditional cleavages between gender roles, local people and internal migrants, and permanent workers and precarious ones, even in the state-owned enterprises.
