Öğe Analysis of TSR-based SVC for a three-phase system with static and dynamic loads(IEEE, 2007) Gelen, A.; Yalcinoz, T.In this paper, the effect of the thyristor switched reactor-based Static VAr Compensator (SVC), which is one of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) controllers, to load voltages has been proposed in the three-phase system at static load and dynamic load conditions. The design and testing of TSR- based SVC are verified using the MATLAB/S imulink 7.04 (R) and Power Systems Toolbox. The results show that significant improvement on reactive power compensation and bus voltage regulation could be achieved by using the TSR-based SVC. Also, harmonic levels generated by TSR-based SVC do not cause to instability in the test system.Öğe Dynamic modeling and simulation of air-breathing proton exchange membrane fuel cell(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2008) Yalcinoz, T.; Alam, M. S.Small fuel cells have shown excellent potential as alternative energy sources for portable applications. One of the most promising fuel cell technologies for portable applications is air-breathing fuel cells. In this paper, a dynamic model of an air-breathing PEM fuel cell (AB-PEMFC) system is presented. The analytical modeling and simulation of the air-breathing PEM fuel cell system are verified using Matlab, Simulink and SimPowerSystems Blockset. To show the effectiveness of the proposed AB-PEMFC model, two case studies are carried out using the Matlab software package. In the first case study, the dynamic behavior of the proposed AB-PEMFC system is compared with that of a planar air-breathing PEM fuel cell model. In the second case study, the validation of the air-breathing PEM fuel cell-based power source is carried out for the portable application. Test results show that the proposed AB-PEMFC system can be considered as a viable alternative energy sources for portable applications. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, issues related to the implementation of the soft computing techniques are highlighted for a successful application to solve economic dispatch (ED) problem, which is a constrained optimization problem in power systems. First of all, a survey covering the basics of the techniques is presented and then implementation of the techniques in the ED problem is discussed. The soft computing techniques, namely tabu search (TS), genetic algorithm (GA), Hopfield neural network (HNN) and multi-layered perceptron (MLP) are applied to solve the ED problem. The techniques are tested on power systems consisting of 6 and 20 generating units and the results are compared to highlight the performance of the soft computing techniques. Future directions and open-ended problems in implementation of soft computing techniques for constrained optimization problems in power system are indicated. Suggestions are presented to improve soft computing techniques. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. S.Transient power demand fluctuations and maintaining high energy density are important for many portable devices. Small fuel cells are potentially good candidates as alternative energy sources for portable applications. Hybrid power sources have some inherent properties which may be effectively utilized to improve the efficiency and dynamic response of the system. In this paper, an improved dynamic model considering the characteristics of the temperature and equivalent internal resistance is presented for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The dynamic behavior of a system with hybrid PEM fuel cells and an ultracapacitor bank is simulated. The hybrid PEM fuel cell/ ultracapacitor bank system is used for powering a portable device (such as a laptop computer). The power requirement of a laptop computer varies significantly under different operation conditions. The analytical models of the hybrid system with PEM fuel cells and an ultracapacitor bank are designed and simulated by developing a detailed simulation software using Matlab, Simulink and SimPowerSystems Blockset for portable applications. S.This paper focuses on the experimental verification of an electrochemical model of 100 W portable direct hydrogen fed proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell (FC). The model is built based on the relationship between the FC terminal voltage and the partial pressures of hydrogen and oxygen. The model is then used to predict the output voltage and study the transient response of a PEM FC when subjected to rapid changes in the load. To validate the model, the measurements obtained from a commercially available 100W FC are compared against the model results. Three different scenarios are considered for testing the model and the actual FC. In the first two scenarios, a step change in the load is used. In the third scenario, the load is replaced by a laptop computer. Results show a close agreement between the voltage and the power responses of the proposed model and the actual PEM FC.
