Özet
This study focuses on the evaluation of the calculated nonlinear displacement demands for single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. The SDOF systems, which are subjected to ground motions recorded in Turkey during Marmara Earthquake (August 17th, 1999) and Duzce Earthquake (November 12th, 1999), have a variety of initial period, T values ranging from 0,1 sec. to 2,0 sec. In addition, nonlinear displacement responses of the SDOF systems are investigated for different base shear strength coefficients, Cy using both Reducing Stiffness and Elasto-Plastic models. A viscous damping of 2% of critical damping is assumed. The nonlinear displacement requirements are compared to the linear displacement response spectra developed by Lepage. In the light of the findings from the earthquake records; considering the velocity increment, ?V, an approach regarding the energy input to a system during the strong motion shaking is introduced. The concept of ground velocity increment, ?V and its effects on the nonlinear displacement response of SDOF systems will be investigated. The correlation between maximum nonlinear displacement response and ground velocity increment, ?V will be evaluated. The change in displacement corresponding to a velocity increment will be estimated by using an idealized model similar to those used by Westergaard and Newmark, considering a rectangular pulse of acceleration. © 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers.
