Özet
The main purpose of this research is to examine the state in which music teachers play the traditional Turkish folk instruments. The research is descriptive. The sample group of the research is composed of 78 music teachers who were employed in 11 different provinces of Turkey in the 2007-2008 academic years. The music teachers of the sample group conduct the music lessons at primary first and second levels. The data have been gathered with a questionnaire. In the range distributions concerning the analysis of the data, the numbers of individuals (n), the frequency (f) and the percentage (%) have been used. According to the results of the research, 18 of the music teachers (23,1%) have not received any training on any Turkish folk instruments in the university from which they graduated. Besides, 60 music teachers (76,9%) have been educated on "ba?lama" in their university. However, 42 of the music teachers (53,8%) use the Turkish folk instruments in music lessons. The music teachers who use the Turkish folk instruments use the instrument(s) for enjoyment practice, for accompaniment to Turkish folk songs (türkü) or for the purpose of education and teach the "ba?lama" instrument. 11 of the 26 music teachers (%42,3) who have indicated that they teach the instrument use a method. The training programs/curriculums of the courses aiming at the Turkish folk instruments in the institutions where music teachers are trained need revising. In the departments of music teacher training, optional courses for more Turkish folk instruments can be opened.
