Abstract
Plants being immobile are prone to changes in their environment and respond to these changes by altering their growth and development in metabolical level. Understanding the changes of cellular metabolism is important with respect to plant science to be able to realize and alter the key factors in regulation. The road to investigate changes in gene expression of genes started in early 1970s with simpler, yet expensive and not very efficient techniques, such as Northern blotting. The development of second and third-generation DNA sequencing techniques enabled plant scientists to get data for complete gene expression profiling. Nowadays, looking to the big picture of what differs in cellular metabolism during growth or in response to external stimuli is extended to a new level with the development of single-cell RNA-sequencing methodology. Realization of specific regulatory mechanisms of metabolic activities and celltype/age-based responses to external stimuli will definitely escalate plant science. The aim of this chapter is to summarize the technological development in transcriptomics studies emphasizing their potential use. © 2020 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
