Öğe A study on the novels of H. E. Adıvar, R. N. Güntekin and Y. K. Karaosmanoglu, authors from the national struggle period, in the context of popular culture(Cyprus International University, 2018) Ünalan, Duygu; Özer, ÖmerIn this study, it is aimed to examine the novels of the National Struggle Period specific to Halide Edip Adıvar, Reşat Nuri Güntekin and Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu in the context of popular culture elements. For this purpose, the novels of Halide Edip Adıvar's Ateşten Gömlek (1923), Kalp Ağrısı (1924) and Vurun Kahpeye (1923); Reşat Nuri Güntekin's Ateş Gecesi (1942), Damga (1924), Gizli El (1924) and Yeşil Gece (1928); Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu's Ankara (1934), Kiralık Konak (1922), Sodom ve Gomore (1928) and Yaban (1932) are analyzed. The selected novels of these authors are analyzed through the Marxist Economy Political Approach. The study is based on the Marxist Economy Political Approach in the light of a common standpoint that popular culture identifiers are political and economic relations in the field of production. In this regard, the characteristics of popular culture elements of the National Struggle Period are evaluated through the novels mentioned above, taking into consideration the socio-economic structure of the epoch. © 2018 Cyprus International University. Materials and Methods: The study included 387 patients older than 50 years who underwent surgery for senile cataract. They were divided into two subgroups as hydroimplantation (group 1) and viscoimplantation (group 2). Results: The mean implantation time was 397.5±44.3 s in group 1 and 580±105.1 s in group 2. During the follow-up period (12 months), 4 (2.1%) patients in group 1 and 28 (14.6%) patients in group 2 developed posterior capsular opacification. The implantation time was shorter and the rate of posterior capsular opacification was lower in group 1 compared to group 2 (pÖğe Evaluation of Cataract Surgery Outcomes in Geriatric Population with Geriatric Depression Scale(2024) Ünal, Gonca Ayşe; Özer, Ayşegül Barak; Güçlü, Emin Serbülent; Özer, Ömer; Baysal, ZekiAim: To show the changes in geriatric depression scale (GDS) scores in patients undergoing senile cataract sur- gery. Methods: A total of 74 patients aged 60 years and older who presented to the Mersin City E&R hospital Ophthal- mology Clinic between January 01, 2023, and May 01, 2023, with low vision and underwent phacoemulsification surgery for senile cataract were included in this study. Patients with antidepressant use and/or ongoing follow-up and treatment for depression in a psychiatric clinic were excluded from this study. All patients were evaluated with the GDS before the surgery and the third month after surgery. Results: When the distribution according to GDS is analyzed, 38 patients scored 0-10 points, 18 patients scored 11-13 points, 18 patients scored 14 points and above in the preoperative period. In the postoperative period, 49 patients scored 0-10 points, 14 patients scored 11-13 points, 11 patients scored 14 points and above. The mean preoperative GDS score was 10.22 ± 5.01, while the mean postoperative GDS score was 8.2 ± 4.92. There was a positive correlation (r=0.680 preoperative and r=0.801 postoperative) between visual acuity and GDS score in the preoperative period (p<0.001 for both). Conclusions: Cataract surgery may potentially reduce the risk of depression or shorten the duration of depression in geriatric patientsÖğe OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANALYSIS OF RETINAL THICKNESS IN COVID-19 PATIENTS(2024) Güçlü, Emin Serbülent; Özer, ÖmerOBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform Optical Coherence Tomography analysis of retinal changes in patients with COVID-19 infection and compare them with healthy controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this purpose, 42 COVID-19 positive patients (group 1) and 44 healthy adults (group 2), aged between 18 and 68 years, who were admitted to our clinic between October 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021, were included in the study. Central foveal thickness, choroidal thickness (subfoveal) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber thickness were measured. Measurements were performed at the central fovea and at 1500 ?m nasal and 1500 ?m temporal points from the central fovea. RESULTS: Age and gender distribution were similar in the groups (p=0.610 and p=0.992, respectively). However, central foveal thickness (p<0.001), subfoveal choroidal thickness (p=0.001) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (p<0.001) were significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, central fovea, subfoveal choroidal and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were higher in polymerase chain reaction positive COVID-19 patients compared to healthy controls. To understand the pathogenesis of systemic and local changes caused by COVID-19, multicenter and long-term studies with a large number of patient subgroups are necessary.Öğe Protective properties of spectacle lenses used as ultraviolet blockers(2024) Baysal, Zeki; Biçer, Gamze Yıldırım; Özer, ÖmerIn this study, we evaluated the UV transmittance of spectacle lenses in the Turkish market, which are reported to have UV blocking properties, and tested their suitability. Samples were obtained from patients who were admitted to the ophthalmology outpatient clinic of our hospital for refractive error and who wore glasses as UV block. No limitation was made regarding the spectacle size and duration of spectacle wear. Measurements were tested by the principal investigator using an ultraviolet detector. The right and left lens were measured separately. All measurements were performed at room temperature (22-25°C) in a humidity regulated (20-40%) room without direct light. UV protection level was measured for 120 spectacles used for refractive errors. Only 28 (23.3%) of 120 glasses had protection level up to 400 nm UV. Twenty-four (20%) of the glasses had a protection level of 0 even though they were labeled as having UV blocking properties. It is clear that strict regulations need to be implemented to improve the protection levels of glasses.Öğe Psychiatric Sequelae in Adult Open Globe Injury Patients(Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 2024) Ünal, Gonca Ayşe; Özer, ÖmerBackground: The aim of this study was to investigate psychiatric sequelae in open globe injury patients and to identify the risk factors associated with these sequelae. Methods: After a complete ophthalmologic examination, Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Zung Depression Scale (ZDS) scores were administered to all patients. Patients were divided into 5 groups according to final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA): group 1 (no perception of light, NPL), group 2 [perception of light (PL) or hand movements (HM)], group 3 (1/200 to 19/200), group 4 (20/200 to 20/50), and group 5 (20/40 or above). Results: A total of 113 patients with open globe injuries were included. The mean ZDS scores were 78.5±35.9 in group 1, 66.2±24.5 in group 2, and 27.6±2.1 in group 5. In group 1, 8 patients (66.7%) had moderate depression. In group 2, 20 patients (60.6%) had mild depression. All patients in group 4 and group 5 had ZDS scores in the normal range. There is a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of ZDS scores. In univariate analysis, depression (ZDS) and trauma (DTS) scores were associated with younger age (P=0.016 and P=0.003, respectively) and lower final visual acuity level (P<0.001, for both). In multivariate analysis adjusted for age and sex, a lower final visual acuity level (P<0.001, for both) was also associated. Conclusions: In conclusion, high anxiety and depression scores can be seen in open globe injury patients. Patients with young age and lower final visual acuity should be carefully screened, and the presence of a psychiatric pathology should be investigated. Amelioration of psychiatric pathologies may improve patient compliance with treatment and clinical success. Copyright © 2024 by Mutaz B. Habal, MD.
