Öğe Centralization and perceived control of COVID -19 during the pandemic: A cross-sectional study(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2022) Tekin, Cigdem Samanci; Kesim, Selma InfalObjective: To uncover the impact of centralization of COVID-19 and perceived control of COVID-19 on society during the pandemic. Methods: We recruited a total of 1 041 people in this cross-sectional study. The data were collected using a questionnaire booklet covering demographics, a COVID-19-related information form, the Centrality of Event Scale, and the Perception of Control of COVID-19 Scale. We utilized independent samples t-test, chi-square test, and one-way analysis of variance to analyze the data. Results: 1041 questionnaires were collected and no questionnaire were excluded from our study. Slightly more than half of the participants (51.2%) stated that social isolation impaired public mental health, while 30.1% reported adverse impacts of the pandemic on their sleep quality. Participants with changes to their sleep patterns were found to centralize COVID-19 more. Moreover, measures against COVID-19 and constant announcements of the daily number of cases in the media brought both positive and negative effects on people and further contributed to the participants' centralization of COVID-19. Individuals with low centralization scores were concluded to perceive COVID-19 as a minor disease. Healthcare professionals without a relative diagnosed with COVID-19 and those satisfied with treatment opportunities had a higher perceived control of COVID-19, while those who were not interested in statistical data on COVID-19 and who had difficulty complying with the rules had a lower perceived control of COVID-19. Besides, poorer perceived control of COVID-19 was found to adversely affect sleep quality. Furthermore, healthcare professionals scored higher on the inevitability subscale of the Perception of Control of COVID-19 Scale. Finally, among the participants, most COVID-19 survivors thought COVID-19 to be an avoidable disease. Conclusion: In addition to its physical impacts, COVID-19 adversely impacts on mental health, and these effects are closely linked to a society's centralization of COVID-19 and perceived control of COVID-19.Öğe Exploring the impacts of perceived locus of control on post-traumatic stress disorder among disaster survivors: A systematic review(Wiley, 2024) Guzel, Aysun; Tekin, Cigdem Samanci; Yamac, Sabriye UcanAim: The present systematic review explored the impacts of perceived locus of control on PTSD among individuals experiencing disasters. Method: This is a systematic review study carried out through a search of the relevant research published in English over the period December 2021 to April 2022. Accordingly, we sought the studies to review on the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane and Google Scholar databases using the keywords Child, Children, Adolescent, Adolescence, Adult, Aged, Elderly, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, Internal-External Control, Locus of Control, Disasters, Natural Disasters. Results: A total of 1.011 studies were found in the five databases using the keywords above. Following the exclusions, the remaining six studies were recruited for this systematic review. The six studies in question addressed earthquakes (2), hurricanes (1), wildfires (1), SARS (1) and fireworks explosions (1). In the study with wildfire survivors, there was a weak significant association between external locus of control and PTSD among those directly exposed to the disaster (r = .15, p < .01). The study with survivors of the SARS epidemic demonstrated that those with a high perceived chance (external) locus of control suffered PTSD (p = .001). An internal locus of control is considered important in preventing PTSD, although an external locus of control appears to be a variable that causes/increases the prevalence of PTSD. Conclusion: It was concluded that perceived locus of control is related to PTSD in individuals experiencing a disaster. The additional evidence was that post-disaster PTSD among those with a high perceived external locus of control is stronger than those with a high perceived internal locus of control.Öğe Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on health-promoting lifestyle behaviors: A cross-sectional study(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2023) Tekin, Cigdem Samanci; Kilic, ZuleyhaObjective: To explore health-improving behaviors during COVID-19 pandemic and to reveal the impact of the risk perception of COVID-19 on these behaviors. Methods: We recruited a total of 510 participants for this crosssectional study. The data were collected online using a questionnaire booklet covering a form inquiring about the participants' demographic, physical, and mental characteristics, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale, and the COVID-19 Perceived Risk Scale. Results: The mean age of the participants was (28.7 +/- 10.1) years, and 76.1% were females. Of the participants, 31.8% were overweight and obese. While 35.1% experienced negative alterations in their dietary patterns, 23.9% reported positive changes to their diet during the pandemic. Besides, 47.8% reported their sleep to be negatively affected during the pandemic. While the rate of those with extended screen time was 72.5%, it was 44.3% for the participants engaging in regular exercise. More than one-third of the participants (35.9%) had high and severe anxiety. We also found increased risk perception of COVID-19 among females, obese, those with disturbed eating and sleep quality, healthcare workers, and those with severe anxiety. Conclusions: Overall, the pandemic has appeared to have brought both positive and negative impacts on maintaining and improving eating, sleep, physical activity, and mental health.Öğe Knowledge Level About Insects and Mites of Health School Students(Marmara Univ, Inst Health Sciences, 2021) Bagriacik, Nil; Tekin, Cigdem SamanciObjective: Today, diseases transmitted by insects and mites still remain an important public health problem. Therefore, the training received by health personnel and their experiences on this topic is important. This study was conducted to determine the knowledge and experiences of students, who were health personnel candidates, on insects and mites likely to be encountered in hospitals or on patients Methods: This study is cross-sectional. No sample selection was made and 1st - and 4th-grade students in midwifery and nursing departments constituted the universe. Independent-samples t-tests compared knowledge to identify differences by students ` experiences and education about insects and mites, chi(2) tests compared frequency of correct knowledge answers according to experiences and education about insects and mites. Results: The participants stated that, in their daily lives, they mostly encountered cockroaches (77.9%) in their environment and lice (52.5%) on their bodies. In this study, the prominent finding was that both experiences and education were important in getting information on insects and mites. Students' ratio of thinking that they had sufficient knowledge on insects and mites, the ratio of recognizing insects and mites given in images, the mean scores of correct answers given to the propositions on insects and mites, and the knowledge of struggling methods were low. Conclusion: Today's changing environmental conditions have increased the risk of confronting epidemics related to insects and mites at any time. Therefore, it is highly important for health personnel, who are actively involved in epidemics and who consult the community, to receive effective training on insects and mites during the university period.Öğe The role of community pharmacists in public health and public health related problems which they encounter(Istanbul Univ, Fac Pharmacy, 2020) Tekin, Cigdem SamanciBackground and Aims: This study was conducted in order to identify the role of community pharmacists in public health and the public health related problems which are encountered.
