Öğe Changes of surface properties of calcite particles with calcium stearate using conventional experimental design and properties of coated calcite(Oficyna Wydawnicza Politechniki Wroclawskiej, 2018) Ucurum M.; Bayram O.; Toraman O.Y.; Kilic H.; Yalcin S.Calcite is utilized as a filler mineral in the industries such as plastics, rubber, and paint, to gain products with a variety of features. In order to use a calcite ore as a filler, some specific physical and physico-chemical properties are required such as ultra-fine sizes and conversion of hydrophilic to hydrophobic structure. In the present study, for these purposes, surfaces of the ultra-fine calcite powder (d50=2.94 µm) were coated by a mechano-chemical process with calcium stearate [Ca(C17H35COO)2] in a stirred ball mill. The influence of operating parameters such as calcite filling-ratio, ball-filling ratio, operation speed, grinding time and chemical dosage on the active ratio (%) was systematically examined. Then, the properties of modified calcite product were measured and evaluated by contact angle, TGA, DTA, FTIR, and SEM. The results showed that the mechano-chemical technology is very effective for modifying the surface of micronized calcite products using calcium stearate chemical. © Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.Öğe Estimating the rock strength from a crushability index(CRC Press/Balkema, 2016) Kahraman S.; Toraman O.Y.Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) are widely used in rock engineering. However, preparing standard samples for the strength tests may not always be possible for weak rocks. On the other hand, only rock fragments are available to estimate the rock strength in some cases such as drilling. Therefore, developing some models for estimating the rock strength from rock fragments will be useful. In this study, a crushability index (CI) was described from crushing test and the possibility of predicting UCS and BTS from this index was investigated. Strong and significant linear correlations were found between the CI and both the UCS and BTS. It is concluded that the UCS and BTS of rock can be estimated from the CI. The suggested method is especially useful for the drilling industry and for the cases where there are not enough samples for the standard tests. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.Öğe Ultra fine grinding of calcite powder in a stirred media mill: The effect of some parameters on product size distribution(Korza Matbaacilik, 2011) Toraman O.Y.Experimental investigations on the wet ultra fine grinding of calcite (CaCO3) powder in stirred bead mill are presented. The net volume of the milling chamber is 0.75 liters. The grinding chamber is made of ceramic to reduce the wear on the materials of the mill. For cooling purposes, the grinding chamber is also equipped with a water jacket for cooling. The grinding media selected for the tests are 1 mm diameter zirconia beads. The influence of some operating parameters such as solids concentration (%), grinding time (min.), stirrer speed (rpm) and bead filling ratio (% of net mill volume) on the size distribution of ground product is discussed. The effect of grinding time on the particle size distribution and fineness is highly significant and positive. The variables stirrer speed and bead load have also positive effects on the grinding.Öğe Ultra fine grinting of calcite (CaCO3) power in a vertical stirred mill: Effect of some variables on product fineless(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2012) Toraman O.Y.In this study, the wet ultra fine grinding of calcite (CaCO3) powder in a vertical stirred mill was performed. The influence of some operating variables such as solids concentration, stirrer speed and ball filling ratio on the product fineness and specific surface area of ground products was discussed. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
