Democratic Exit from the Crisis: The Developments in Iceland Politics between 2008-2017
    (Sosyoekonomi Soc, 2019) Yildirim, Yavuz
Iceland experienced the 2008 economic crisis intensely as the banking system collapsed. The various developments ocurred in the country over the past decade, such as a new constitution making process, the loss of legitimacy of the long-running ruling parties, the formation of new parties, the rise of old minor parties, frequently renewal of elections, coalition building efforts, referendums on debts and EU membership. The study aims to explain how democratic claims in Iceland govern economic crisis and change the established political spectrum. Icelandic politics, with its peaceful street demonstrations and the possibility of institutional new political construction, has brought democracy beyond the liberal democracy. This tiny island is a concrete case that the economic crisis can be overcome by staying within the democratic initially announced as collapse, explosion, melting.

Heavy metal in Turkey: Tracking the tensions of democratization in the 1990s
    (Wiley, 2023) Yildirim, Yavuz
Music, as a form of public discourse, invariably becomes a social science field that is considered more in the postmodern era when the boundaries are blurred. This study examines the political and cultural links between the emergence of the heavy metal genre and Turkish democracy. There are correlations between the prevalence of heavy metal in Turkey and the country's social and political transition in the 1990s and the search for a new path. The main argument here is that, among the country's tense democratization efforts and social problems, the heavy metal genre also indirectly carries the distinct traces of a different political search for the youth of the 1990s, although not directly. Democratic politics is a process established by daily life with the direct influence of societal interactions, and Turkish politics, and cultural life, in this case, heavy metal, include important notions in this remarkable manner. The main point symbolized by metal music in Turkey was its lyrical and artistic ability to express different points of view loudly enough against the uniform religious and nationalist culture that could be offensive, while other mainstream ranges such as pop and arabesque music didn't mind this issue.

M5S, Lega, PD, and Italy's Never Ending Political Crises
    (Istanbul Univ, 2021) Yildirim, Yavuz
In Italy, many governments and coalitions have formed and dissolved in the post-1993 era, called the Second Republic. During this period, various legal changes have affected political life. In the past 25 years, political agents have struggled to make good on the wishes for change, and society's renewal has reshaped the country. This study focuses on these developments since the mid-1990s to understand the recent shifts in Italy. The article emphasizes the effects of Lega and the M5S, the newest political agents rising in Italian democracy, and examines them in the context of the crisis of populism and liberal democracy. The study argues that the continuing democratic debate in Italy protects democracy from the tendency to turn authoritarian. Conversely, the never-ending crises and fluctuations make the stability of central politics more and more challenging. This tension in democracy extends beyond Italy to the whole of European politics.

Social movements in Turkey: Changing dynamics since 1968
(Peter Lang AG, 2015) Yildirim, Yavuz
The chapter provides a historical perspective on the role of civil society and social movements in Turkey. Discussing with the British and American social movement literature it is argued that these do not easily apply to the Turkish case, due to the particularity of the Turkish civil society and political culture. Historically, Turkish movements have not been independent of the state and rarely organised by grass-root movements generally, but rather institutionalised and state-related in their struggle for power. Yet, the recent uprisings in Gezi Park and elsewhere in Istanbul show a new development in the role and potential for social and political change in the Turkish context. © Peter Lang GmbH. The challenging definition of democracy at the latest collective actions
(Editura Universitatii din Bucuresti, 2017) Yildirim, Yavuz
Social movements challenge the neoliberal economic tendencies in their own areas or regions and they are getting together to struggle in a more effective manner. These protests indicate that the established definitions and concepts have not run to match the people sovereignty. People from different places of the world raise their voices in the streets with different reasons and their common point is to change something in decision-making process which is in lacking of representatives. Especially the democracy under the pressure of neoliberal free market economy does not reflect popular demands but rather organizes the market relations under the control of expertise. Democracy is radically challenged in these latest efforts and actions. Because this well-known-concept does not run for people life, in contrast, the politics without democracy make them out of the game. The main argument of the study is that new movements criticize the liberal democracy and they create new spaces for the citizens in political debates against the policy process of the decision-makers or professionals. © 2017 Editura Universitatii din Bucuresti.
