Özet

Alawism, which is one of the structured spiritual organizations, includes the examples of the Anatolian cultural mosaic that have reached these days with both the semah (Alawi ritual dance) tradition based on the circular ritual understanding and the zakirlik (Alawi religious minstrel) tradition which takes its source from the esoteric thought, and its music productions. Music which has a wide activity field from its effect on the human's spiritual development to the key role in the relationship of God, human and the universe has been an important part of the process of handing down tradition, and reflecting the cultural memory, the oral compositions has taken on an important task of conveying the spiritual knowledge. All these activity fields brought with a kind of music perception that intertwined with the mystical teachings, and music has found meaning as one of the important expression ways of the cultural knowledge in this tradition. Having organized with the associations and foundations in the city centres as a result of the social processes such as urbanization, modernization, and globalization since the 1960s, Alawism became apparent with various organizations, ceremonies and concerts different from the village communities of the past, therefore it put forth an extroverted structure. The djem rituals, the zakirlik tradition and its music practices that have come into prominence within this scope are a sign of the cultural unity in the city environment as being different from the semantic content of the past. At the same time, it has transformed into the elements supporting an existence consciousness which has been trying to adapt itself to nowadays conditions, break its shell. Hence, whether music is a part of a modal programmed mechanism or it is a means of a spiritual catharsis taking its source from the thought of faith has shown up as the two factors which play a role in determining today's rituals. In this study, an answer has been sought for this problem in the direction of the sample which is determined as The Alawi Culture Associations Mersin Djemevi located in the city of Mersin, and it is focused on the differences between the tradition perception of the past and the quality of today's practice. In this direction, this research based on the qualitative research methodology and techniques is carried out with the culture analysis pattern. © 2020 Ankara Haci Bayram Veli University.
