This study was carried out to detect the blood parasites in domestic pigeons in Adana province. Different pigeon-houses were visited monthly and anverage of twenty pigeons older than one year old were selected randomly during the study. All pigeons were examined for the presence of blood parasites and blood smears were prepared in order to detect blood parasites. In addition, the pigeons and their sheds were investigated for vector insects. The examination of the blood smears showed that 128 out of 196 pigeon (65.3%) were infected with Haemoproteus columbae. Throughout the study, Pseudolynchia canariensis, a vector of the disease were found on most of the pigeons. The average number of the infected red blood cells in domestic pigeons carrying H. columbae were determined as 295.4 (n/200). Hovewer, no other blood parasites were detected in the blood smears, including Plasmodium, Leucocytozoon and Trypanosoma. As a result of the microscopic examinations, H. columbae was the highest in June (91.3%) while it was the lowest in February (26.6%). The difference in the microscopic positivity to H. columbae between the months was statistically significant (P<0.01). Evaluation of the finding of conducted study indicated that, H. columbae was determined on domestic pigeon in Adana province and was also detected at high level (65.3%) by the microscopic examination.
