Tez; Giriş, I.Bölüm, II.
This thesis is aimed at determining where, in Niğde, the followers of the Orthodox Church were settled, what and how sociocultural factors shaped their lives, and which of their works have survived from earlier times. The thesis then attempts to scientifically evaluate the data collected by this means and contribute, if any, to those studies carried out on the Orthodox people living in Asia Minor. This research has particularly sought to find out as many documents, works and other means of information as possible which would help prove that there existed a group of people in Niğde called the Orthodox Turks. ?The Caramanians?, who have much been discussed and dealt with in various studies, are another subject of this thesis, though in the limited scale of the city of Niğde. The thesis is comprised of the following four sections: Introduction; Section I, Section II and Results. The Introduction section gives a general view of the political and cultural activities of the Orthodox Turks throughout Asia Minor. Section I deals with the first contacts of Turks with Christianity in various geographic zones; the reasons for these contacts; the influence of the Byzantine Empire in the Turks? embrace of Christianity, and settlement of Turks in masses in Asia Minor by the Byzantine Empire. Other information given is Section I is as follows: the origins of ?the Caramanians? as they were called after the domination of Asia Minor by the Turks; their position in Asia Minor; and the socioeconomic and political activities and the demographic characteristics of particularly the Caramanians who lived in Niğde.Section II addresses the issue of the surviving works of the Orthodox Turks, called the Caramanians. Archives and various sources found in different libraries were scanned and examined in order to determine the names and places of such works. This was followed by field study which made it possible to ascertain the present states of these surviving works. The section of Results is where the works of Orthodox Turks that have been found out are evaluated in the light of data obtained in the course of this study
