dc.description.abstractThe main purpose of this research is to present the current status of theDepartment of Social Studies Education in Turkey in 2017. In this study,the number of students studying in Social Studies Education Departmentin 2017, the number of faculty members working in this department, thenumber of students enrolled in this department change according to theyears and universities and the number of appointments of social studiesteaching between 2013-2017. In this study, qualitative research methodswere used. While determining the number of students in the departmentand the base points of the program, the information in the OSYM guide forthe last 4 years was taken into consideration in determining the number offaculty members and the internet pages of the related departments weretaken into consideration in determining the number of faculty members.According to the results of the research, the Department of Social StudiesEducation actively carries out education activities in 59 universities inTurkey as of 2017. Based on the quota of LYS, the total number of studentsin the Department of social studies teaching is 15.639. It is observed thatthe scores of the Department of social studies teaching are quite variable.The highest score student placed in social studies teacher program in 2016is 25,800 while the lowest score student's score is 75,900. According tothe data of the year 2013-2017, Istanbul University is the Universitypreferred by the highest scores students who are placed in social studiesteaching program. As a result of the research, it was determined that thenumber of students who were placed in the Department of social studiesteaching of universities is very high compared to the number ofappointments and therefore there are approximately 27,500 people waitingto be appointed. Due to the increase in the number of students waiting forthe appointment, the number of candidates taking the ÖABT social studiesexam has been gradually decreasing since 2015. According to the resultsof the study, the number of quotas of Social Studies Education departmentsin Turkey is reduced; increasing the number of faculty members can besaid to be beneficial in terms of quality and achievement of future goals.
